Certainly, the pandemic has made many of us mindful of germs these days. We want our homes to be as clean as possible. Housekeeping Associates recommends replacing or cleaning regular household objects as a habit. Here are three rooms to focus on: your bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom.
Bedroom – Bed Sheets
We spend nearly half our day in our bed (the average time is 11 hours a day). In that time, we shed millions of skin cells, sweat at night, and allow our pets to bring in dander and fur into our sheets. This is not to mention fungi and pollen settling down on our bed. Imagine all the microorganisms under your covers? With that said, you should wash your bed sheets weekly or (minimally) every other week. If someone is recovering from an illness, consider washing up bed linen immediately. Plus, there’s a nice feeling when you climb into bed with fresh, clean sheets.
Kitchen – Dish Rags
The kitchen is the heart of the home, and we spend many hours in it daily. Preparing food means there is plenty of dishwashing. Throughout the day, your dishcloth collects food particles and bacteria that lay in the material’s fibers. Each bacteria divides into two every 15 minutes. This means you can start with 100 cells of bacteria, and it can grow to thousands within an hour. The fact the rag is moist will only speed up the bacteria growing process. Replace the dishcloth with a new one daily. Wash the used rag in hot water and place it into a heated dryer before using it again.
Bathroom – Bath Towels
Our bath towels stay moist a good majority of the time. This is especially true in the summer, when humidity can slow down the drying process. One study shows 90% of used bath towels contain coliform bacteria, and 14% have E. coli. Certainly, this study makes you want to wash towels frequently. Take the risk out of getting sick with this type of bacteria. Change out your bath towels one or two times per week. Regular cleaning of the towels will keep them smelling fresh too.
Changing out sheets, towels, dishcloths and cleaning them regularly will help protect you and your family from illness-producing bacteria. Keep your house clean, and keep you and your family healthy.
